Elon Musk’s ‘BAKERY’: Elon Musk is currently the world’s richest man. He is the CEO of automotive company Tesla, chief of SpaceX and also owns microblogging platform X. From surprising the world by making rockets – Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy – which land vertically after launch to selling electric cars, he has done all the big things that made headlines across the world. But if we tell you that the world’s richest man, who has done mammoth things, also runs a ‘bakery’, will you believe us? Well it is true, but Musk’s bakery doesn’t specialise in cake, pastries and breads, instead the highly automated facility is a SpaceX production site. Lets know more about this bakery.

What Elon Musk Cooks In His ‘Bakery’?

Located in Florida, the bakery manufactures ceramic heat shield tiles used on the Starship spacecraft. These carefully designed tiles come in sharp hexagonal shapes.  These tiles act as a shield and protect the spaceship from high temperatures during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

Notably, when a spacecraft re-enters Earth’s atmosphere, the temperature sometimes reaches 1,400 degrees Celsius. So to protect the spacecraft from the intense heat and further damage, these tiles have a unique design, including pin attachments and small expansion gaps, enabling them to stretch without cracking.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Elon Musk’s ‘bakery’ produces ceramic heat shield tiles for Starship spacecraft.
  • Each spacecraft needs around 18,000 hexagonal tiles.
  • Tiles undergo high-temperature baking to achieve uniform structure.
  • Facility called a ‘bakery’ due to the baking-like process.

How Many Tiles Are Required To Protect A Spacecraft?

As per reports, each Starship needs nearly 18,000 hexagonal tiles. These tiles are specially built from advanced silica-based ceramics, which is layered with black borosilicate glass. The entire process, from transforming raw material into the finished product, takes approx 40 hours. It simply means that Elon Musk’s bakery is capable of mass-producing thousands of tiles every day.

Why Elon Musk Called His Facility ‘World’s Most Advanced Bakery’?

It is worth noting that the facility is called ‘bakery’ as its operations, in which tiles undergo a rigorous baking process, look like a normal bakery that prepares bread. These tiles undergo high-temperature furnaces where they get their uniform structure.

Apart from these tiles, Starship also has several layers of stainless steel and ablative materials to boost its power and resilience.
