This Muslim country’s city is world’s most POLLUTED, tops global pollution index, smog engulfs Punjab
The air pollution crisis in Punjab intensified on Saturday with Lahore once again has ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Lahore: Grap Stage-III has been imposed in Delhi and adjoining NCR after the air quality of the region deteriorated to ‘severe’ level. Doctors have also showed concerns, stating that health of kids and elderlies are in danger. Despite the worsening air quality, Delhi is not the most polluted city in the world. The most polluted city in the world is Pakistan’s Lahore. The city tops the global pollution index on Saturday as thick smog enveloped major parts of the city for the fourth consecutive day, The Dawn reported.
Why Lahore Has Become World’s Most Polluted City?
As per IQAir, Lahore’s Air Quality Index AQI increased to ‘hazardous’ level of 577 on Saturday early morning. However, the air quality showed some improvement later in the day.
According to Dawn, AQI readings at multiple monitoring points in Lahore stood at 448 at Phase 8 DHA, 342 at Gurumangat Road, and 305 near the AC Office Shalimar Complex Wahga by 8 pm.
Other cities across Punjab also reeled under severe smog conditions, the publication said. Gujranwala recorded particulate matter levels reaching 632, while Sialkot’s AQI touched 462, heightening public health alarms and prompting urgent appeals from experts for precautionary measures.
What Did Environmental Specialists Say?
Environmental specialists warned that prolonged exposure to such extreme air pollution can trigger respiratory illnesses, eye and throat irritation, and could contribute to chronic health issues. Residents were urged to reduce outdoor movement, wear masks, and limit exposure as much as possible.
Lahore’s Weather Forecast
As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department, most districts of Punjab will experience dry weather in the coming days. The smog will also continue to intensify in the low-lying areas.
As smog covered Lahore, Dawn reported that a local organisation distributed masks and encouraged people to check vehicle emissions. Volunteers also requested that people wear protective face coverings when leaving their homes.
