Two soldiers martyred, three injured in major attack on Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur

New Delhi: A group of armed men attacked an Assam Rifles vehicle in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday, 19 September 2025, evening, followed by indiscriminate firing. Two soldiers were reportedly killed and three others injured in the firing. Officials said the incident occurred in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area of ​​the district in the evening. Officials said the attackers ambushed the vehicle, which was carrying Assam Rifles personnel from Imphal to the Bishnupur district. The injured soldiers were rushed to a hospital by police and locals, where they are receiving treatment.

According to a statement issued by the Defence Department, “Unidentified terrorists ambushed an (Assam Rifles) contingent on a highway in a non-notified area of ​​Manipur. Two Assam Rifles soldiers were martyred in the attack, and five others were injured. They have been admitted to RIMS and are currently in stable condition. A search operation is underway to apprehend the terrorists involved in the incident.”

According to officials, the soldiers killed in the attack have been identified as Naik Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Keshap. They said the incident site is about 16 km from the capital, Imphal, and police and forensic personnel have recovered several empty cartridges.

Additional security forces reach the site

An official said that additional security forces have been deployed in the area, while a search operation has been launched in the surrounding areas to apprehend the attackers. Injured soldier N Nongthon told the media, “About four to five attackers suddenly opened fire on us. We did not retaliate immediately because civilians could have been injured, as this was not a deserted area.”

Governor condemns the attack

According to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla condemned the attack on security forces. Manipur is currently under the President’s rule. According to the statement, “The Governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the martyred soldiers. He acknowledged their unwavering courage and dedication in defending the nation.”
