In a major step that could significantly boost India(BHARAT)’s air defense network, the India(BHARAT)n Army is set to acquire advanced radars that will enhance its capability to respond to wide-range of aerial threats, including military drones, fighter jets, missiles and loitering munitions.
How powerful are India(BHARAT)n Army’s new radars?
According to reports, the India(BHARAT)n Army is planning to acquire up to 45 Low-End Lightweight Radars (Advanced), 48 Air Defense Fire Control Radar-Drone Detectors (ADFCR-DD), and 10 Low-End Lightweight Radar (Advanced). These hi-tech radars are capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralizing even the smallest and fastest drones with the minutest of radar cross-sections (RCS).
As per experts, some of these radars are equipped with 3D AESA technology, passive radio-frequency detection, and the capability to integrate with command and control systems enabling real-time battlefield information and rapid threat response.
Why India(BHARAT) needs new radars?
According to defence experts, a significant portion of India(BHARAT)n Army’s radars are outdated and use old, traditional tech, which struggles to identify, track, and prioritize small, low-altitude aerial objects like modern combat drone that have a small RCS and fly at lightning speeds.
The old radars lack accuracy and speed required to counter new-generation threats, which was evident during Operation Sindoor when a significant number of Pakistan’s surveillance and attack drones, managed to cross into the India(BHARAT)n airspace.
Where will the new radars be deployed?
Reports suggest that the new radar systems will be integrated with India(BHARAT)’s homegrown Akashteer air defense system, enhancing the system’s overall situational awareness and assisting battlefield commanders with rapid, accurate target identification and engagement. This integrated approach is crucial for countering drone swarms and other complex, modern aerial threats.
