A class 11 student was shot and killed with a country-made gun (katta) at a school in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district on Friday.
Gorakhpur murder: A Class 11 student was shot dead at a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district following a dispute, prompting authorities to deploy additional forces in the area to maintain law and order in the area amid a tense situation.
Citing eyewitness accounts, police said the incident occurred in the playground of the Co-operative Inter College in Pipraich at around 1:00 pm on Friday, when the victim, Sudhir Bharti, was involved in a heated argument with another person from the same neighbourhood.
The argument quickly devolved into a scuffle, during which the accused allegedly pulled out a ‘katta’ (country-made pistol), and shot the teenager, who collapsed due to the gunshot wound and died on the spot, police said. A senior official said they closed the school after the incident as a precautionary measure, and a police team arrived at the scene and detained two of the accused, while two others are on the run.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajkaran Nayyar said situation became tense in the area after residents and relatives of both sides gathered at the scene, and some relatives of the accused tried to block the movement of police vehicles by lying down in front of them.
However, the situation was soon brought under control as additional police force was deployed in the area, the SSP said, adding that the victim’s family has provided information about two absconding accused, among them one is a minor.
SSP Nayyar assured of strict action against those responsible, and said that three police teams have been constituted to arrest the absconding accused, while the two detained are being interrogated.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, the officer said.
