What serious illnesses is pollution causing apart from respiratory problems, and who are at the greatest risk?
When a person breathes, tiny particles of pollution, called PM 2.5, enter the bloodstream through the lungs.
New Delhi: Increased pollution has become a major threat to health. The situation is particularly dire in Delhi-NCR. It’s a matter of concern that pollution is now affecting bones and joints. Small particles (PM2.5) in polluted air are affecting the body’s immune system, leading to problems like rheumatoid arthritis, joint inflammation, and bone weakness. Those with existing conditions are facing further complications. This claim has been made in a study by AIIMS, New Delhi.
Rheumatoid arthritis
According to Dr. Uma Kumar, HOD of the Department of Rheumatology at AIIMS, Delhi, a variety of diseases are caused by a malfunction in the body’s immune system. One of these diseases is rheumatoid arthritis. Increased pollution is increasing the risk of this disease. The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis is increasing due to pollution, reports TV9.
Dr. Kumar said that in Delhi, the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis worsen every winter. Patients whose condition remains stable year-round experience worsening symptoms during this time. This pattern has been observed for several years. One reason for this may be increased pollution in winter.
How does pollution attack joints?
Dr. Uma explains that when a person breathes, tiny particles of pollution, called PM 2.5, enter the bloodstream through the lungs. They then circulate throughout the body, increasing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. This also affects the joints. Pollution is also affecting the immune system. This causes the immune system to attack its own healthy cells and tissues, increasing the risk of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, especially in those who already suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
