All about Govardhan Puja 2024
In accordance with Hindu mythology, the residents of Vrindavan, including the cowherd community, were privy to worshipping Indra, the king of gods, to verify good rainfall for their crops. Lord Krishna, in his childhood, advised the villagers to stop worshipping Indra and as a replacement worship Govardhan Hill, which provided them with sustenance through its natural resources.
Angered by this, Indra unleashed heavy rains and floods upon Vrindavan. In response, Lord Krishna lifted the total Govardhan Hill together with his little finger, providing shelter to the villagers and their cattle.
Realising Krishna’s divine powers, Indra at last acknowledged Krishna’s supremacy and ceased the storm, leading to the celebration of Govardhan Puja.
The festival symbolises the triumph of devotion and faith over arrogance and pride. It emphasizes the importance of nature and the should respect and protect it. The festival fosters a mode of community as families and neighbors come together to prepare special offerings. The preparation of a massive sort of vegetarian dishes, in most cases is called “Annakut,” symbolises abundance and gratitude.
