Bengali playback singer Lagnajita Chakraborty recently came into the spotlight after an unsettling incident during a live performance in West Bengal. The singer later spoke about facing abuse and alleged physical intimidation at a school event, which raised concerns about artist safety at public and private programmes.

While the event initially appeared to be a regular cultural evening, things took a disturbing turn midway through her performance, leaving the singer shaken. The matter has since been officially reported, and the incident has sparked widespread discussion.

Who Is Lagnajita Chakraborty?

Lagnajita Chakraborty is a well-known name in the Bengali music industry. She is a playback singer who mainly works in Bengali films and independent music projects. She became widely popular after the song “Basanto Eshe Geche” from the film Chotushkone, which earned her massive appreciation from audiences.

Over the years, she has delivered several memorable songs such as Odol Bodol, Sokhi Rongo Koto Bol, Aamar Maa, Noor Jahaan, Hridoyer Rong, Kotota Raat, and Ekti Golpo Shunio. In 2015, she was honoured with the Sera Bangali award for her contribution to music.

What happened at the event?

The incident occurred during a school programme held in the Bhagabanpur area of Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal. According to the singer’s complaint, the event started around 7:00 pm and went smoothly for nearly 45 minutes.

Trouble began after she finished her seventh song of the evening. As part of her set, she had just performed “Jago Ma”, a devotional song from the film Debi Choudhurani, released during the last Durga Puja season. While she was briefly addressing the audience before moving on to the next song, an unexpected interruption took place.

Lagnajita alleged that a man suddenly rushed onto the stage and came extremely close to her in an aggressive manner. She stated that a few people present intervened and stopped him before the situation worsened.

The man allegedly shouted at her and demanded that she stop singing devotional songs and perform something “secular” instead. The singer later identified the accused as Mehboob Mallick, who is reportedly one of the owners associated with the school where the event was held. Following the incident, Lagnajita Chakraborty filed an official complaint, describing the abuse and the fear she experienced during the performance.
