Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the current ruling party, is expected to appoint its Uttar Pradesh president at a grand event which will be held in Lucknow on December 14. The saffron party is likely to appoint Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary as its UP unit chief. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and National General Secretary Vinod Tawde will attend the ceremony. Let’s know more about Pankaj Chaudhary.

Who Is Pankaj Chaudhary?

Pankaj Chaudhary is a veteran BJP leader and a a seven-time MP from the Mahrajganj constituency. His mother Ujjwal Chaudhary also served as the Maharajganj District Panchayat President. Chaudhary completed his graduation from Gorakhpur University.

Pankaj Chaudhary Political Career

Pankaj Chaudhary’s political career started when he was a Member of the Municipal Corporation in Gorakhpur. He served the position from 1989 to 1991, during this period, he held the position of Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation for one year. Later, he was appointed as the Deputy Mayor of Gorakhpur.

He joined the saffron party in 1990. Chaudhary was appointed as the MoS for Finance in the second PM Modi Cabinet.

Represents Kurmi Community

He belongs to the Kurmi community which falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community. It is to be noted that Kurmis are the second largest after Yadavs. The community has an impact in the Terai, Kashi, Gorakhpur, Awadh, and Rohilkhand regions.

Chaudhary emerged as a Kurmi leader after Santosh Gangwar was appointed as the governor.

The saffron party is strategically planning to appoint an OBC leader as Uttar Pradesh president, considering the 2027 Assembly elections.

It is expected that outgoing state vice-president Bhupendra Chaudhary may get a significant position in the state Cabinet. The party is also expected to give a major role to Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.
