Countries Where Women Outnumber Men:  Global gender debate is not a new thing. It has been happening for years mainly focused on equality in education, employment and politics. But now, another issue is emerging which is catching the attention of scientists – the number of women has surpassed that of men in several countries. However, it is not a sudden shift and has slowly happened because of ageing populations, migration patterns and changing lifestyles. Let’s check out the countries where women outnumber men in terms of population.

Countries Where Women Outnumber Men

As per 2024 population figures shared by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the World Bank, women outnumbered men in Eastern Europe, parts of Asia, and Southern Africa.

This imbalance in the gender ratio is most pronounced in European countries. Countries such as Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine have 118 women for every 100 men, highest in the world. The reason for the imbalance is the lower average age of men, massive male migration because of employment and other reasons, and highest share of women in an ageing population.

The disproportionate ratio or a major difference between the male and female populations is also similar in major countries like Russia and Belarus. Western European countries such as – Portugal, France and Germany also have more women than men. However, the different in not that big. The reason of the imbalance is women’s average age being 4-6 years higher.

Women Population In Asia, Nepal And Hong Kong Has Clear Trends

In Nepal, the population of women are increasing as men are going abroad for employment. In Hong Kong, the gender difference persists for years as lifespan of women is better than of men. Men have lower survival rates than women in Hong Kong.

What About Africa and South America?

In Lesotho and Namibia, men usually migrate to South Africa for work in mines and industrial areas. Due to this, the population of women are increasing there. In South American countries such as Argentina and Uruguay, the elderly population outnumbers men.

It is to be noted that the number of men and women worldwide is approx equal. There are about 101 men for every 100 women.
