After the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, China has once again showcased its world-class engineering. This time, it is with the Huajiang Canyon Bridge. The Huajiang Canyon Bridge is on track to become the tallest bridge in the world. Spanning a deep canyon at an awe-inspiring height of 2,051 feet, the bridge has not only set a new record, but it also demonstrates China’s continued presence as an international leader in high-end infrastructure projects.

Where is the World’s Tallest Bridge located?

The Huajiang Canyon Bridge was built at a cost of about $283 million. Amazingly, the bridge rises nearly 300 feet higher than the tallest building in the United States, One World Trade Center, which is 1,776 feet tall. When the Huajiang Canyon Bridge is operational, it will surpass the Duge Bridge, which is currently the tallest bridge in the world at 1,854 feet, as the new tallest bridge. Interestingly enough, the Duge Bridge is also in China, where it seems like they are taking the prize for the most record-breaking structures.

How much taller is it compared to the US World Trade Center?

In 2022, construction of the Huajiang Canyon Bridge commenced over the Huajiang Valley in southwestern Guizhou, China. The bridge will cross above the Beipan River at the bottom of the canyon. The Huajiang Canyon Bridge, once completed, will eliminate a one-hour crossing over the valley to a mere three minutes!

How long did it take to complete the Construction?

In conversation with Newsweek, Professor Mamdouh El-Badry, a civil engineering expert at the University of Calgary, said that although it is complicated to build at such extreme heights, the bridge was built much quicker than other bridges at lower heights, demonstrating the construction ability and efficiency. While speaking to Newsweek, El-Badry stated, “In other parts of the world, a project of this scale would typically take five to 10 years from groundbreaking to completion, depending on environmental, political, and logistical factors.”

What was the total cost of building this engineering marvel?

China maintains its position as a world leader in the tallest bridges. Out of the top six tallest bridges in the world, all six are in China. 43 of the tallest 50 bridges in the world are currently in China. The United States has only three bridges among the tallest 50 bridges in the world.

One prominent factor for this predominance is the mountainous nature of China, especially in the west and southwest. The province of Guizhou is a perfect example. When travelling a distance across Guizhou or other mountainous regions of China, it is impossible to build traditional roads across deep valleys and rugged terrains. So the only way for transportation, faster and more direct routes, or progress in improving these remote areas, is to build bridges.

In a statement, Chen Jianlei, deputy director of the Guizhou Transport Department, stated, “The completion of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge will strengthen economic ties between Guiyang, Anshun and Qianxinan, fostering regional economic integration,” reported Newsweek.
