US President Doland Trump said on Thursday he had agreed with President Xi Jinping to trim tariffs on China in exchange for Beijing cracking down on the illicit fentanyl trade, resuming US soybean purchases and keeping rare earths exports flowing.
What are these rare earth minerals? How have they come to dominate global diplomacy? This is a question that, without addressing, cannot explain the US U-turn on China. On October 27, US President Doland Trump announced to the world that he was going to strike a trade deal with China. This was an interesting statement, as previously, announcements of US tariff wars against China had always made news.
This feat was achieved thanks to rare earths, a mineral that China dominates globally. It controls 70% of their production. China has turned them into a weapon of global power balance. This is precisely why Trump had to be arrested. America’s defense, energy, and technology industries cannot function without these minerals.
Why the need for many industries?
For example, the US F-35 fighter jet uses 418 kg of rare earths. Similarly, the US Navy’s destroyer fleet, the Arleigh Burke DDG 51 destroyer, uses 2,600 kg of rare earth elements. This is just the case in the US defense sector. Other industries also struggle to function without them. Manufacturing everything from electric vehicles to smartphones is impossible without them. China stated that any company or country using its rare earths will need to obtain its approval.
Under the framework for a trade agreement now in place between the two countries, China has indicated it will postpone its rare earth minerals export ban to the US by at least one year. Significantly, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant announced that the threat of Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on Chinese goods has been completely averted. In return, China is willing to resume soybean purchases and postpone its export ban on rare earth minerals by at least one year.
