Peshawar: In a horrific and shocking incident, at least 38 people were brutally killed and a couple of others sustained injuries after vehicles carrying passengers were targeted by militants in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, Dawn reported.

The attack took place inside the Kurram district of restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where militants ambushed the vehicles. The convoy of vehicles became going to Peshawar from Parachinar when armed militants opened fire, the officials said.

Rescue authorities said 38 people, including women and youths, were killed inside the attack. An awful lot of the victims belonged to the Shia community, they said.

The attack took place in a neighborhood dominated by the Taliban, The India Express reported citing a neighborhood journalist.

As per local media, there were more than 200 vehicles inside the convoy.

Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, became highly important of the new assault. He quickly made a response team comprising the provincial law superior, local legislators, and one of many most best-ranking administrative official. The team dispatched to Kurram with immediate effect, tasked with scrutinizing the issue on the bottom and furnishing a detailed report.

CM Gandapur also announced financial assistance for the families of the victims.

“Targeting innocent civilians is very tragic and condemnable. Those involved on this incident will no longer get away the grip of the law,” he said.

In Kurram, a region inside the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sunni and Shiite communities have been caught up in ongoing unrest that has been flaring up over the previous months.

A specific incident in October saw matters escalate right into a sectarian brawl that tragically claimed at least 16 lives, including those of three women and 2 teenagers. Previously, the region had witnessed heightened violence in July and September that resulted in different casualties.

These conflicts sooner or later halted following the intervention of a jirga, an indigenous tribal council, who brokered a ceasefire to ameliorate the situation.
