4 killed as massive fire engulfs 35-story building in Hong Kong, many trapped

New Delhi: A fire broke out in three buildings of a 35-story residential complex in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district on Wednesday, 26 November 2025. According to the South China Morning Post, four people have died, and nine others are injured.

Reports indicate that the fire spread to at least three buildings. According to the BBC, at least 13 people are still trapped inside.

These towers at Wang Fuk Court were covered with bamboo scaffolding. Bamboo scaffolding is widely used in construction and renovation projects in Hong Kong. This is believed to be the reason for the rapid spread of the fire.

Renovation work was underway at the complex

Wang Fuk Court is a housing complex in the Tai Po area of the New Territories, where repair and renovation work is currently underway. The estate has 1,984 flats and is home to approximately 4,000 people.

The Hong Kong government said temporary shelters have been opened following the fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex. These shelters have been set up at the Kwong Fuk Community Hall and the Tung Cheong Street Leisure Building.

A help desk has also been set up at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital to provide assistance and information.

The government said the Tai Po District Office is closely monitoring the situation and will open more shelters if needed. The fire department said one firefighter was among the dead. The department told Reuters that it was unknown how many people may still be trapped inside the complex.

Local public broadcaster RTHK quoted police as saying that several people were still trapped in the towers.
