Imran Khan murdered inside Pakistan’s Adiala Jail? Here’s the real truth behind the viral claim

Reports accompanied by images have surfaced on social media platforms claiming that jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been murdered inside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where the 73-year-old has been incarcerated since August 2023.

Did Pakistani state assassinate Imran Khan?

The rumors about the alleged assassination of Imran Khan stem from social media posts, that cited “sources” to claim that the former Pakistani premier has been killed. Several posts, including one from an X handle claiming to represent the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baluchistan”, carried a purported image showing Khan lying motionless on a stretcher.

“Reports are now surfacing from inside the prisons of Punjabi Pakistan that Imran Khan, who was being held in custody, has been killed by Asim Munir and his ISI administration according to several news outlets. If this information is confirmed to be true, it marks the absolute end of terrorist Pakistan. The collapse of its last remaining legitimacy will begin the moment the truth is exposed to the world,” the post reads.

According to Afghanistan Times, a “credible source” told the outlet that Imran Khan has been “mysteriously killed”, and his body has been moved out of the prison.

Is Imran Khan dead?

Notably, there is no official confirmation to back reports of Imran Khan’s alleged killing as no reputed news outlet, international or otherwise, has reported the former PM’s death. Moreover, most of the accounts that have reported Khan’s purported assassination, have flagged as fake, including the ‘Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baluchistan’, which is based in North America.

Additionally, independent fact-checkers noted that the image of Imran Khan being circulated on social media handles is from November 2022, when the jailed ex-PM had indeed survived an assassination attempt.

Thus, as per currently available information, there is no credible evidence to suggest that Imran Khan has been assassinated.

Imran Khan’s sisters ‘brutally assaulted’ outside Adiala jail

Meanwhile, the rumors of Imran Khan’s death come a week after his sisters– Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr Uzma Khan– were allegedly assaulted by the police outside the Adiala Jail. Khan’s sisters, along with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members and supporters, had camped outside the prison after after being denied a meeting with him for a month.

In a statement, PTI said they were sitting outside the jail when police personnel pounced on them and brutally assaulted them for what the party said was “their crime for seeking a meeting with Imran Khan”.

On Tuesday, Khan’s sisters, in a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar said the violence was “brutal and orchestrated and carried out by policemen without provocation.”

“We peacefully protested over concerns for his health condition. We neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement, nor engaged in any unlawful conduct. Yet, without warning or provocation, the streetlights in the area were abruptly switched off, deliberately casting the scene into darkness. What followed was a brutal and orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel,” Noreen Niazi said.

“At the age of 71, I was seized by my hair, thrown violently to the ground, and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries,” she lambasted, and claimed that she and other women present outside the jail were slapped and dragged.

“Police’s conduct was part of a broader and troubling pattern of indiscriminate force used against peacefully protesting citizens over three years, reflecting a troubling impunity.”

Even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was not allowed to meet Imran Khan. Afridi made seven consecutive attempts to see him in jail, but he was denied by the jail authorities, whom Khan claims were controlled by an army officer.
