According to the NavBharatTimes Hindi report, Bangladesh’s Air Force has signed a Letter of Intent(LOI) with Leonardo, an Italian defense organization pertaining to the acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoons. In signing the LOI, Bangladesh expressed the desire to acquire the newest version of the Eurofighter Typhoon from Italy. There is still a long way to go before this agreement will be acted upon. Nonetheless, this is considered to be a significant milestone towards modernizing the Bangladesh Air Force. Previously, Bangladesh had shown interest in acquiring China’s J-10 fighter jet, according to recent reports.
When was the agreement for Eurofighter Typhoon jets finalized?
As per the verified Facebook account of the Bangladesh Air Force, as cited by the NavBharatTimes report, has announced the signing of a Letter of Intent that took place on December 9, at the Air Force HQ in Dhaka. Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force, and Italy’s Antonio Alessandro, Ambassador to Bangladesh, were both present at the ceremony along with other high-ranking military officials from both countries.

An eleven-member inter-ministerial committee was created in April, chaired by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Mohammed Yunus, to negotiate an acquisition agreement to acquire 20 Chinese-built J-10 fighter aircraft for $2.2 billion. While negotiations have taken place to reach a final agreement, Bangladesh has not yet signed a formal agreement for purchasing these aircraft from China.
