Munir’s current tour of Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries is his first foreign visit since he was promoted to Pakistan’s newly created post of chief of defence forces.
Pakistan’s top military officer, Syed Asim Munir has received King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellence which is Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian award. He was given the honour during his official visit to Saudi Arabia. According to the Pakistan Army, the award was approved under a Royal Decree issued by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who is known as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The announcement was made on Monday, December 22, 2025.
Saudi leaders praised Field Marshal Munir for his professionalism and clear strategic thinking. They also appreciated his efforts to strengthen the long-standing and friendly relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Field Marshal Munir thanked the Saudi leadership for the honour. He said the award shows the strong and lasting ties between the two countries. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the security, stability, and growth of the Kingdom.
During his visit, Field Marshal Munir met Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Defence. Both sides discussed issues of shared interest, including regional security, defence and military cooperation, strategic partnership, and changing geopolitical challenges.
The award comes a few months after Mohammed bin Salman signed a defence agreement with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, underlining the long and close strategic ties between the two countries.
In September, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif said that Pakistan’s nuclear programme could be shared with Saudi Arabia if needed, under the new defence agreement.
Munir’s current tour of Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries is his first foreign visit since he was promoted to Pakistan’s newly created post of chief of defence forces. The role was introduced to improve coordination between the army, navy, and air force.
Munir gained wider attention earlier this year after Pakistan said it pushed back India(BHARAT) during a four-day border clash. The two nuclear-armed neighbours carried out strikes against each other in May after India(BHARAT) launched an operation against militants inside Pakistan. New Delhi said the militants were linked to the killing of 26 tourists in India(BHARAT)-controlled Kashmir.
