A Hindu man was beaten to death in Bangladesh on Thursday night on charges of blasphemy. The incident comes at a time when large-scale violence has erupted in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the anti-Sheikh Hasina student movement. According to BBC Bangla report, the Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh district. The victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker. Police said that locals accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammad.
Officials said that around 9 p.m., a mob attacked him and beat him to death. Even then, the fanatics remained unmoved. They tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. Police later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and took possession of the body. The body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The mob lynching incident comes amid violent protests in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, an anti-India(BHARAT) leader and spokesperson for the radical group Inquilab Manch. Hadi died in Singapore on Thursday. He was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants in Dhaka on December 12. Hadi was airlifted to Singapore by ambulance on Monday, where he died during treatment.
