Washington: In the latest development in the Ukraine-Russia ongoing conflict, representatives of the United States and Ukraine held a discussion in Geneva on Sunday. During the meeting, they discussed the US peace proposal, which was focused on achieving a resolution to the conflict. Both the sides, after the meeting, issued a joint statement terming the talks as “constructive, focused, and respectful”. The statement also stated that the talks were focused on achieving a just and lasting peace.

“Both sides agreed the consultations were highly productive. The discussions showed meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,” the statement said.

What Did The Joint Statement Say?

According to the joint statement, any future agreement must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace. As a result of the discussions, the parties drafted an updated and refined peace framework.’

The delegation of Kyiv hailed the steadfast commitment of US President Doland Trump, mentioning that his administration’s ‘tireless efforts’ focussed on ending the years-long war without losing life.

Both the sides in Geneva agreed that they will put their effort on joint proposals and to remain in close contact with their European countries. Final decisions will be taken by Presidents of Ukraine and the United States.

Showing optimism on Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio termed the talks as ‘productive and meaningful’, CNN reported.

What Did Us Secretary Of State Tell Reporters After The First Session?

Notably, Washington has put forward a 28-point peace plan that continues to evolve as the delegates are trying to achieve terms that both Russia and Ukraine agree to accept.

“This is a living, breathing document. Every day, with input, it changes,” he said, “The items that remain open are not insurmountable. We just need more time than what we have today,” Rubio said.

CNN reported that Washington faced criticism from both major political parties as it gave several concessions to Russia. The proposal forces Ukraine to give up some of its territory, reduce the size of its military and stay out of NATO in return for ending the ongoing war. These are the demands of Russia that it has been demanding for a long time.
