New Delhi: Israel has carried out a major airstrike against Houthi rebels in the Yemeni capital Sanaa. The military and political leadership of the Houthis have suffered major losses in this attack. Israeli TV KAN, citing Yemeni media, reported that Houthi Prime Minister Ghalib al-Rahwi and several military officers of the group were killed in this attack.
Israeli media have called it the biggest attack on Yemen’s Houthis. The attack was carried out when these top leaders were watching the nationally broadcast speech of Houthi chief K al-Malik Houthi. The news of this attack was first given by Al Masirah TV, operated by the Houthi group, and then Defence Minister Israel Katz and the IDF also confirmed the attack. However, they did not talk about the targets.
Targeted inside an apartment
Yemen’s Al-Jumhuriya channel reported that Houthi Prime Minister al-Rahwi was in an apartment with several of his aides when he was targeted. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Houthi Defence Minister Mohammed Nasser al-Atifi and Chief of Staff Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari are also likely to have been killed in the attack.
No official statement has been issued yet
However, no official statement has been issued about the death of the three Houthi leaders. Israeli media has also stressed that their condition is unknown at this time. The Saudi newspaper Al-Hadath reported that the Israeli Air Force targeted houses in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, where senior officials were hiding.
Leaders had gathered to listen to Al-Houthi’s speech
The Israeli media report quoted unnamed security officials as saying that Israeli intelligence agencies learned that 10 Houthi ministers, including the Defence Minister, and other senior officials were gathering outside Sanaa to listen to a planned speech by the group’s leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi. After this, the Israeli Air Force targeted this meeting and attacked. Al Rahawi was the Prime Minister of Houthi-occupied Yemen for a year. However, he did not receive international recognition.
