BSNL gears up to launch Wi-Fi calling service, special benefits planned for women and students
BSNL is starting a new service called VoWiFi, which will help your phone calls work better inside buildings using Wi-Fi. They are also creating special, cheaper phone plans just for women and students.
BSNL is gearing up to roll out its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service nationwide, with special focus on women and students, according to company chairman A. Robert J. Ravi.
Currently, BSNL is conducting live pilot tests in two zones where VoWiFi has shown strong performance in indoor and low-signal environments. Once cleared, the service will let subscribers make and receive calls over Wi-Fi or broadband even when mobile network coverage is weak or absent.
Alongside the technology launch, BSNL plans to introduce tailored recharge/business-plans aimed at women and students – offering enhanced talk-time, longer validity and competitive pricing. The company says these schemes are among its “priority targets”.
With the VoWiFi rollout, BSNL will join rivals – Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea – in offering Wi-Fi calling services in India(BHARAT). The feature is especially relevant for users in indoor or low-signal zones and is expected to strengthen BSNL’s overall connectivity offering.
For users, the set-up will require a BSNL SIM, a compatible handset supporting Wi-Fi calling and a stable Wi-Fi/broadband connection. Details on pricing eligibility and rollout timing are yet to be finalised.
