Dhurandhar fame, real life Rehman Dakait saved former Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto’s life several times
For more than a decade, Rahman's reign of terror extended not only across Lyari but also to other parts of Karachi.
New Delhi: The Bollywood film ‘Dhurandhar’ has brought the Lyari area of Karachi, Pakistan, and its gangster Rehman Baloch into the spotlight. In the film, Akshaye Khanna plays the role of Rehman, who was the biggest don of Lyari for many years. Besides his crimes, Rahman’s connections with politicians are also discussed. He was also acquainted with Benazir Bhutto, a prominent leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the country’s former Prime Minister. It is claimed that it was Rehman who saved Benazir from a bomb blast in 2007.
Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in October 2007 after nine years of exile. On October 18, millions of supporters gathered in Karachi to welcome her. During her procession, two bomb blasts occurred. Benazir Bhutto narrowly escaped these blasts. Immediately after the blasts, Benazir reached her home in Clifton in a white car. People present at the spot claim that it was none other than Rehman Dakait who rescued Bhutto from the blasts.
Rehman Started Committing Crimes At A Young Age
Abdul Rehman Baloch was born in Lyari in 1975 into a family where he witnessed crime from childhood. His father was a drug trafficker. Rehman also started selling drugs at a young age. At just 13 years old, he entered the world of crime by stabbing a man. Not only that, in 1995, Rehman killed his own mother as he suspected her of having relations with a member of another gang.
After 1995, Abdul Rehman Baloch progressed so rapidly in the world of crime that he became Rehman Dakait. Rehman was involved in crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, and murder. For more than a decade, Rehman’s reign of terror extended not only across Lyari but also to several other parts of Karachi. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) also played a role in Rehman’s rise to power.
The PPP and Rehman Dakait
According to a report in The Tribune, a PPP insider believes that Rehman Dakait’s family had been receiving political patronage since the 1960s. In particular, when Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto founded the PPP in 1967, he gained significant influence in Lyari. Lyari has remained a PPP stronghold since 1967.
Benazir Bhutto even held her wedding reception in Lyari in 1987, demonstrating her strong connection to the area. It was believed that Rahman’s men were responsible for the security of Benazir and other PPP leaders at public events for a long time. Reportedly, when Benazir returned to Pakistan in 2007 and took to the streets, she was surrounded by Rehman’s men. After the bombing, Rehman himself reportedly helped Benazir escape the crowd.
