‘Did not kill Sharif Osman Hadi, never entered India…’: Prime accused Faisal Karim Masud releases new video message, claims murder was carried out by…

The murder of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi has sent shockwaves across Bangladesh. Hadi, 32, was shot in the head on December 12 during an election campaign in Dhaka. He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment but died of his injuries on December 18. Hadi was a prominent youth leader during the July-August 2024 mass street protests that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government last year. He was also a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming February 12 elections.

What did Masud claim in the new video?

Faisal Karim Masud has been named as the prime suspect for the murder of the Inquilab Moncho leader, Sharif Osman Hadi. Over a span of almost exactly 24 hours, Masud, a radical anti-India(BHARAT) leader, has posted a second video of himself, reiterating his innocence. In the second video, Masud claims that he is currently in Dubai and has no connection to the killing.

Bangladeshi journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury posted the video on the social media platform X(previously Twitter). In it, Faisal Karim Masud vehemently refuted the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s allegation that he fled to India(BHARAT) through the Halua Ghat border following the murder, claiming that he had never entered India(BHARAT) and called the police’s accusation wholly untrue. Suspect Faisal Karim Masud said, “I have not in any way, initially or later, been involved. This is completely false.”

How does Masud explain his connection with Hadi?

In the self-recorded video, Faisal Masud identified himself as a software engineer and businessman whose IT company lost money after Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown in August 2024 due to a student-led rebellion in July of last year. He claimed that he went to Hadi for assistance in obtaining IT contracts and government-related jobs.

“After I spoke to him, he assured me that I would get the job. He also wanted five lah taka, so I gave him the money,” Masud stated, adding that the payment was intended for lobbying within the offices of the interim Muhammad Yunus government.

Masud stated that over time, their relationship, which began with contracts, evolved into an affiliation for political organising. According to Masud, Brother Hadi had requested that Masud mobilise volunteers to participate in programs related to the Yunus government. Masud claimed that Hadi had told him, “Brother, you give me 50 people on the 16 December so I can succeed in my programme.” He reported that all conversations with Hadi regarding logistics and finances were normal and not contentious.

Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?

For the second time within 24 hours, Faisal Karim Masud has released a video denying any involvement in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, reiterating that he was in Dubai at the time of the killing. In his first denial video, Masud asserted that he had no involvement in Hadi’s death and accuses Jamaat Shibir of killing Hadi. Masud maintains that he had only a business relationship with Hadi.

“I did not kill Hadi. My family and I are being implicated. I have come to Dubai to protect myself from the witch hunt. Hadi is a product of Jamat. Jamatis may have been behind it,” Masud mentioned. As the proprietor of an IT company, he said he met Hadi for work-related purposes and gave political contributions in return for promises of government contracts.

Hadi was shot a day after the Election Commission announced on December 12 that the next national election would be held on February 12. He was later airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on December 18.
