Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old India(BHARAT)n-origin democratic socialist politician, was sworn in early Thursday as New York City’s 112th mayor. Mamdani assumed office as New York City’s mayor shortly after midnight Thursday, taking the oath at a historic, decommissioned subway station in Manhattan. He achieved a remarkable win in the highly contested New York City mayoral race, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to the role of mayor of the largest city in the United States. In a brief speech, Mamdani said,” This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime,” as reported by the news agency AP.
He created history by becoming the first Muslim to lead America’s largest city, taking the oath of office with his hand placed on the Quran. Mamdani was sworn in shortly after midnight during a private ceremony attended by his wife, artist Rama Duwaji. His parents, filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, were also present. New York State Attorney General Letitia James, whom Mamdani has previously described as a “political inspiration,” administered the oath of office.
