US officials said they would temporarily stop processing immigration applications from Afghan nationals after the shooting that injured two National Guard soldiers near the White House. President Doland Trump reacted strongly to the attack, which happened the day before Thanksgiving, saying the soldiers were shot at very close range. He called the incident an act of terror and promised quick action. Trump also said, based on information he said came from Homeland Security, that the suspect was an Afghan national, though independent confirmation has not yet been provided.

“Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols,” the US Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a post on X.

“The protections and safety of our homeland and of the American people remains our singular focus and mission,” the post added.

Authorities say the shooter was 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan migrant who arrived in the United States during the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. He was later resettled in Bellingham, Washington. He came to the country through Operation Allies Welcome, a program created by the Biden administration to evacuate and relocate Afghans after the US pullout.

This program brought about 76,000 Afghan people to America. Many of them had helped US forces and diplomats in roles such as translators and interpreters.

Officials said Rahmanullah Lakanwal came to the United States on a special visa meant for Afghans who had helped American troops during the war. A Justice Department official told Reuters that he later stayed in the country after his visa expired and was no longer here legally.

The shooting took place near Farragut Square, a busy park in downtown Washington that many office workers pass through every day. Police said the suspect suddenly came around a corner and attacked the two National Guard members while they were on a high-visibility patrol. Other Guard members fired back and were able to arrest him.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the 500 extra National Guard troops ordered to Washington will be added to the roughly 2,200 already in the city. The move is part of President Trump’s broader efforts related to immigration and crime in major cities run by Democrats.
