Uttar Pradesh is all set for a major road development push. The Yogi Adityanath government has announced a big new plan to extend the proposed Gorakhpur–Shamli Expressway all the way to Panipat in Haryana. Once completed, this expressway will directly connect eastern Uttar Pradesh with Delhi-NCR and Haryana. According to officials, work on the project is expected to begin by March, after the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalised.

Gorakhpur–Panipat Expressway to pass through 22 districts

The expressway will run through about 22 districts of Uttar Pradesh, giving a large part of the state direct connectivity to the national capital region. Some of the key districts along the route include Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Sitapur, Hardoi, Lucknow, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Amroha, Sambhal, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur.

This project will help bridge the distance between eastern and western Uttar Pradesh, making travel faster and smoother.

700 km long – Gorakhpur–Panipat Expressway to be UP’s longest expressway

The expressway from Gorakhpur to Panipat will be around 700 kilometres long, making it one of Uttar Pradesh’s longest expressways. It will be access-controlled, meaning vehicles can enter and exit only from specific points. This will ensure high-speed and uninterrupted travel for passengers.

By connecting to Panipat, a major industrial hub in Haryana, the project will benefit more than 3,000 industries, including textile, wood and furniture, paper, and agro-based units. Many workers from Uttar Pradesh are employed in Panipat’s industries.

Once completed, the expressway will make the transport of raw materials and finished goods much faster and cheaper. It will also make travel easier and more convenient for thousands of workers commuting between the two states.

Six-lane high-speed corridor planned

The Gorakhpur-Panipat Expressway will be a six-lane, high-speed, access-controlled corridor, designed for safe and smooth travel. It can also be expanded to eight lanes in the future, depending on traffic needs. The expressway will be built in ten phases (packages) across Uttar Pradesh, ensuring faster and more efficient construction.

Benefits for multiple states

This major project will not only benefit people in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, but also those living in Bihar and West Bengal. The new expressway will connect with the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway, making travel from eastern Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal faster and easier.

It will also link with the Purvanchal Expressway and the Delhi–Meerut Expressway, improving road connectivity across northern India(BHARAT). This network will help boost travel convenience, trade, and logistics throughout the region.
