Israel might attack staunch US ally Oman for hosting talks with this group; What will Trump do now?
Officials in Muscat cannot ignore the possibility of an Israeli attack on their country.
New Delhi: Israel shocked the world in September by attacking Qatar, a close ally of the USA. Israel carried out airstrikes targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital, Doha. This drew strong displeasure from the US. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu even apologised to Qatar. This led to the belief that such attacks would not be likely in the future, but now fears are being raised about an Israeli attack on Oman.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels
According to Awaaz Media, Oman, like Qatar, has long been an important regional mediator in the Arab world. Recently, there has been increased activity by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in Oman. The Houthis’ presence in Oman is troubling Israel, which considers this group its enemy. It is being speculated that just as it targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar, the Israeli army could launch a similar attack on Houthi leaders in Oman.
Potential future target?
Following the targeting of Hamas leaders in Doha, officials in Muscat cannot ignore the possibility of an Israeli attack on their country. They are concerned that the Israeli army could target Houthi representatives in Oman. Due to this concern, Omani officials are working on various possibilities.
Omani analyst Dr. Abdullah Baabood says Oman has reason to worry and should closely monitor key indicators. Although the Israeli attack on Doha was unanimously condemned throughout the region, causing significant shock, Oman’s role as a host of sensitive negotiations and backchannel diplomacy makes it unique.
‘We will confront it strongly’
Dr Baabood said that the threat of an Israeli attack has been exacerbated by a campaign of misinformation against Muscat. However, despite the threat of an Israeli attack, Oman is not deterred. The Muscat leadership will tighten security within its country by controlling Houthi channels and will work with friendly countries to prevent any Israeli attack. Any further disturbance will be met with a strong response.
