Krishna Janmashtami 2025: Janmashtami is one such festival in the Hindu calendar which is celebrated with great zeal and pomp. This year, the day is celebrated on August 16, 2025. The day is marked as the birth of Lord Krishna — the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu, and it is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada. On this special occasion, devotees across the country observe fasts to seek the blessings of Radha-Krishna.

Observe Fasting
One of the key rituals of Janmashtami is fasting. Devotees may choose to observe either a full or partial fast until midnight, the auspicious hour of Lord Krishna’s birth. Observing this fast with faith and discipline is believed to cleanse both the body and mind.
Maintain cleanliness and purity
It is very important for a person to keep their mind, soul, and body clean and pure on this auspicious day. One has to bathe early in the morning, de-clutter and clean the house, and especially pay extra attention to the puja area.
Prepare homemade prasad
One needs to prepare prasad at home. This prasad is first offered to Lord Krishna and then distributed to others in the home.
Perform midnight aarti
Devotees of Lord Krishna often perform midnight aarti and consider it a crucial ritual.
Don’ts of Janmashtami 2025
Avoid meat, alcohol, garlic
On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, one should strictly avoid onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, tobacco, and intoxicating items.
Don’t consume grains
People who are fasting on Krishna Janmashtami should not consume grains and should only have fruit-based items or milk-based preparations.
Don’t engage in loud celebrations
Though Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with great zeal and pomp, one should avoid loud celebrations which may disturb others.
