Nepal Protests: In more trouble for ousted prime minister KP Sharma Oli, the Gen-Z group who spearheaded the Nepal Gen-Z protests that toppled his government, have demanded the Oli’s arrests for his alleged role in ordering the September 8 shootout that killed 19 agitators, including a 12-year-old school boy, when the police allegedly opened fire on protesters during the anti-government protests.
Why Gen-Z demanded KP Oli’s arrest?
Addressing a presser in conference in Nepal capital Kathmandu, Dr Nicholas Bushal, one of the advisers to the Gen Z group, demanded the immediate arrest of KP Sharma Oli, former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabi Rijal, while accusing them of being “directly responsible” for the fatal shooting of 19 protesters at Naya Baneshwor.
The Gen Z group leader also demanded that the wealth of all high-ranking leaders and government officials since 1990 must be investigated by a high-level probe commission.
Gen-Z activists also staged a sit-in protest to demand the arrest of Lekhak and KP, at Maitighar Mandala near Singhdurbar Secretariat in Kathmandu– the site where the Nepal Gen-Z protest kicked off on September 8.
Oli claims ‘infiltrators’ killed protesters
Meanwhile, the demand for KP Sharma Oli’s arrest comes a day after he claimed that his government did not order the police or armed forces to shoot at protesters. He also claimed the Gen-Z demonstrators were not killed by the Nepal Police, but gunned down by “infiltrators” with automatic weapons, which the cops don’t have.
“The government didn’t order to shoot at the demonstrators. The bullets were fired at the protesters from automatic guns, which were not possessed by the police personnel, and this must be investigated upon,” Oli claimed in a public statement on Friday, his first since he was deposed and go into hiding after protesters stormed his office on September 8.
How Nepal Gen-Z protest for Oli to quit?
KP Sharma Oli quit as the prime minister of Nepal on September 9 after hundreds of protesters stormed his office, demanding his resignation following the killing of at least 19 people in police action during Nepal Gen-Z protest on September 8.
