Nicknamed the “Prince of Mines” for its high-quality diamonds, the Jwaneng Diamond Mine in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana is a joint venture between South African diamond giant De Beers and the Botswana government.
The mine is located 170 km (105 miles) southwest of Gaborone, and estimated to be valued at over $1 billion, making it richest diamond mine in the world. Notably, the Jwaneng diamond mine is an open-pit mine located in middle of a dormant volcano, and was formed around a kimberlite pipe, a rare volcanic rock formation that contains a high concentration of diamonds.
How much reserves does the mine have?
The Jwaneng mine consists of three main kimberlite pipes that produce millions of carats of diamonds each year. According to details, the Jwaneng diamond mine produced an estimated 11.86 million carats of diamonds in 2023, and is expected to remain operational till 2036.
The mine’s discovery dates back to 1973 when it was unearthed by the De Beers Exploration, and was officially opened for operations in 1982, nearly a decade after its discovery. In recent years, the mine has been expanded to include underground mining, and has become of the richest diamond deposits on the planet.
The name “Jwaneng” literally means “a place of gems” in Setswana, and the mine has lived up to that moniker, playing a crucial role in developing the economy of Botswana, transforming it from a poor nation to a middle-income country.
