New Delhi: The government has appointed Senior IPS officer OP Singh as the new director general of police (DGP) of Haryana on October 14, as the incumbent DGP, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, was sent on leave amid a dispute over IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s death by suicide.

“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Om Prakash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave period of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur,” stated Sumita Mishra Singh, additional chief secretary (Home), Haryana, citing a statement.

Who is OP Singh and his relationship with Sushant Singh Rajput?

Om Prakash Singh is the brother-in-law of the late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He is married to Ritu Singh, the elder sister of Sushant Singh Rajput.

He is originally from Madhubani, Bihar. He is due to retire on December 31, 2025. Om Prakash Singh currently serves as the Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula, Director of FSL Madhuban, and Director General of the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau. He is known for his professional skills, discipline, and administrative efficiency. The Governor’s orders stated that this decision was taken during the leave period of former DGP Shatrughan Singh Kapoor to ensure that departmental work is not disrupted.

What’s the whole matter?

On October 7, senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar died by suicide by shooting himself with a security guard’s pistol at his home in Chandigarh. He also wrote a suicide note before committing suicide. In this suicide note, he blamed 15 officers for his death. He alleged that he had been harassed for a long time based on caste. Chandigarh Police have registered a case in this matter. The IPS officer’s IAS wife is unhappy with the police investigation. Because of this, the post-mortem has not been conducted even after eight days.

Following the family’s outrage, the Haryana government sent the incumbent DGP, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, on leave amid a dispute over IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s death by suicide.

Rahul Gandhi visits grieving family

The Opposition has been attacking the state BJP government over the incident. Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi met the late IPS officer’s family at their home in Chandigarh on Tuesday, 14 October 2025. Later, he appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to take every possible action against the perpetrators and ensure that justice is served to the grieving family.
