Salt Lake stadium: SIT begins probe into vandalism at Messi event, action planned against…

Salt Lake stadium violence: Days after violence erupted at the Salt Lake stadium after famous Argentine footballer Messi’s premature exit, Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the West Bengal government on Wednesday began its investigation into the event. After reports of massive vandalism at football star Lionel Messi’s event at the Salt Lake stadium, the government of West Bengal is under immense pressure to take actions against those responsible for the mismanagement.

The main reason behind the violence was the anger of spectators, many of whom were angry because they had bought high-priced tickets, alleged they could not see Messi, who, along with Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul, remained on the field for about 20 minutes but was surrounded by a crowd, including state minister Aroop Biswas.

The team, comprising senior IPS officers Piyush Pandey, Javed Shamim, Supratim Sarkar and Muralidhar, visited the stadium and later went to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate office nearby. A team of forensic officers and the detective department also went to the stadium later to collect evidence.

“They also videographed the entire stadium and collected samples from the stadium, the stands,” the officer said.

The government issued show-cause notices to senior police officers, including the DGP, over mismanagement at Salt Lake Stadium. The action followed a probe into the December 13 chaos, which erupted after Messi’s early exit, leaving many ticket-holders upset as he was surrounded by a crowd and not clearly visible.
