Tesla hit with 'unexpected delay' for delivery of newest model

Fast Facts

  •  Users on the Cybertruck Owners Forum said Friday that their Tesla Cybertruck deliveries have been delayed.
  • Customer support reportedly told one user that the issue was "in fact a recall," though Tesla has not confirmed this.
  • Tesla reportedly said that deliveries will resume April 20.

The legend of Tesla's Cybertruck — that stainless steel electric passion project of CEO Elon Musk — is one mired in production difficulties and delays. First announced in 2019, the truck became bogged down in missed deadlines around the inherent production challenge of building a car out of stainless steel, which doesn't bend very easily.

The alien-looking vehicle broke free of that production hell in November, when Tesla  (TSLA) began delivering Cybertruck models to excited owners who had spent years on a waiting list.

Now, it's faced with another delay.

Users on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum said Friday that their scheduled Cybertruck deliveries had been canceled.

A message from Tesla, posted by one user, read: "We have just been informed of an unexpected delay regarding the preparation of your vehicle. We need to cancel your delivery appointment on Monday and we will reach out again when we're able to get you back on the schedule."

One user said that Tesla customer support "confirmed that this was in fact a recall and not just a problem with my truck. He believed it would require a part to remedy and thought I might hear something on Monday about the timing of the arrival and subsequent installation of such part."

As of Monday morning, neither Tesla nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had posted any announcements concerning a Cybertruck recall.

Neither Tesla nor NHTSA responded to requests for comment.

A separate owner posted a TikTok showing a potential problem with a Cybertruck that had already been delivered; the cover that fits over the accelerator pedal slipped off while he was driving and got wedged into the floorboard, essentially locking the accelerator down.

"Somebody that panics, that could be pretty dangerous," he said, adding that he was able to stop the car by keeping the brake fully depressed, which cancels out the accelerator. He then had to pull over and put the car in park before removing the wedged pedal cover.

Engadget reported that Tesla said deliveries should resume on April 20.
