According to geologists from the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province, advanced 3D geological modelling techniques were employed to map the underground gold deposits with unprecedented accuracy.
A huge gold deposit has been found in central China, and experts believe it may hold around 1,000 metric tonnes of high-quality gold. The discovery was confirmed by the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province in Pingjiang County, located in the northeast part of Hunan. Chinese state media said that the value of this gold could be about 600 billion yuan, which is roughly Rs. 6.9 lakh crore. If these numbers are confirmed, this site could become the largest gold reserve in the world, even bigger than South Africa’s South Deep Mine, which has around 930 tonnes.
Early studies found 40 gold-rich veins within the first 2 kilometres underground, containing nearly 300 tonnes of gold. Using advanced 3D scanning, experts believe there may be even more gold deeper down, possibly up to 3 kilometres.
This discovery could give a major boost to China’s gold mining sector and overall economy.
Chen Rulin, a senior gold exploration expert, said many drilled rock samples had “visible gold” in them. In some parts of the deposit around 2,000 metres deep, one tonne of rock contained as much as 138 grams of gold, which is considered very rich quality.
Liu Yongjun, the deputy head of the bureau, said that modern exploration tools including 3D geological modelling were used at the Wangu gold field to study the underground structure. He added that gold was also found in drilling areas around the main site, which suggests there may be even more reserves waiting to be discovered.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said that the entire Dadonggou Gold Mine area above the -720-meter elevation has proven reserves of 2.586 billion tons of gold ore, with a total gold metal content of 1,444.49 tons and an average grade of 0.56 grams per ton, per the report.
