‘Trump’s leadership…’: PM Modi’s first reaction after Hamas agrees to release Israeli hostages, hails US president’s Gaza peace plan
Earlier this week, Modi had also backed Trump’s Gaza peace plan, calling it a practical and hopeful path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed support for US President Doland Trump’s leadership as peace talks in Gaza showed major progress. Modi said the signs of Israeli hostages being released by Hamas were an important step toward restoring peace in the region. In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote: “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India(BHARAT) will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

Earlier this week, Modi had also backed Trump’s Gaza peace plan, calling it a practical and hopeful path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It offers a viable way forward for long-term peace, security, and development for both the Palestinian and Israeli people, as well as for the wider West Asian region. We hope all parties will unite behind this initiative to end the conflict and build lasting peace,” he said.
Trump’s Gaza peace plan
Doland Trump has ordered Israel to stop bombing Gaza after Hamas said it had agreed to parts of his plan to end the nearly two-year-long war and free all remaining hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks.
“Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly! Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on the details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
He also posted a video message thanking all the countries that helped broker the ‘peace’ in the Middle East.
Hamas announced that it was ready to release the hostages and transfer power to other Palestinian groups, though it added that several parts of the peace plan still needed further discussions among Palestinian factions.
In response, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was preparing for the “immediate implementation” of the first stage of Trump’s plan, which focuses on the release of Israeli hostages.
Soon after, Israeli media reported that the country’s political leadership had instructed the military to scale down its offensive operations in Gaza.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas-led attack, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages taken into Gaza, according to Israeli figures. Israel says 48 hostages are still being held, with 20 believed to be alive.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s health authorities report that Israel’s military operations have killed more than 66,000 people, most of them civilians. Large parts of Gaza have been destroyed, and severe aid restrictions have led to famine-like conditions and a humanitarian crisis across the enclave.
