The US Embassy in Bangladesh also issued an advisory for citizens for December 25, recommending that its citizens remain vigilant.
Bangladesh has witnessed a fresh wave of unrest following the death of Hadi last week. Hadi was a prominent face in the anti-government protests that forced the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government. On the other hand, India(BHARAT) on Tuesday called in Bangladesh envoy Riaz Hamidullah and sought a thorough probe into killing of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi amid sharp downturn in ties between the two countries. New Delhi’s move came hours after India(BHARAT)n envoy to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, was summoned to the foreign ministry to lodge a protest against “regrettable incidents” outside the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi.
What is happening in Bangladesh on December 25?
Meanwhile, visitors (non-passengers) are prohibited from entering the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka starting from Wednesday at 6 pm until Thursday at 6 pm. Also, the German Embassy in Bangladesh will be closed on December 24 and 25.
The US Embassy in Bangladesh also issued an advisory for citizens for December 25, recommending that its citizens remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel to or near the Dhaka Airport or the roadways accessing the airport. The embassy has advised them to keep their flight tickets and passports readily available in case they may be required to present these items to the local police.
As stated in the Dhaka Tribune report, Kausar Mahmood, a spokesperson for Biman Bangladesh, confirmed the decision on Tuesday, stating that the move was motivated by operational and security reasons. The purpose of this change is to provide smooth travel for passengers and to help maintain order and discipline at the airport. Biman has requested the cooperation of both the public and the concerned stakeholders.
Why Dhaka airport imposes restrictions?
On Monday, Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ officials conducted a meeting with representatives from several agencies to discuss security and VIP arrangements for Tarique Rahman’s flight. Ahead of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s return from London, the Government of Bangladesh will impose the highest level of security in and around the airport until he leaves. Access to the airport area will be limited to passengers possessing a valid ticket and passport. Members of the BNP who welcome Tarique Rahman, however, will be allowed entry, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
As a means of preventing harassment from occurring, Tarique Rahman has requested that no passenger be harassed. Security begins with the airplane carrying him. Once he arrives at the airport, police and intelligence agencies will create a very tight security perimeter around him.
Tarique, along with his entourage, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka from London aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight on December 25 morning. A flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Dhaka on Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Flights BG202) is scheduled for departure on Wednesday evening, with Tarique Rahman and his family onboard. In accordance with the security protocol, two cabin crew previously assigned to the flight have been removed. Authorities of Biman Bangladesh Airlines hosted a meeting on Monday with representatives from several agencies to discuss security and VIP arrangements related to Tarique Rahman’s flight.
