Citing sources, Bangladeshi media reported that some army officers are concerned that this action could affect the institution’s image and morale.

New Delhi: In a major development, the Bangladesh Army has arrested at least 14 senior military officers. As per the reports, the arrests were made following an order issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on October 8. The army detained its own 14 serving officers inside the “Log Area” of the Dhaka Cantonment, where they are currently being held temporarily.
According to the reports, there has been growing discontent within the Bangladesh Army, particularly among the officer ranks, over this action. The International Crimes Tribunal had issued orders against 24 serving officers in October last year, and reports suggest that more arrests could follow soon. The tribunal had ordered the arrests to investigate alleged war crimes and other serious charges against these officers.
Here are some of the key details:
- A military officer named Major General Kabir Ahmed has gone into hiding fearing arrest.
- A search operation has been launched to locate Major General Kabir Ahmed.
- The Bangladesh Army, in a press conference held last evening, shared details about the arrests, attempting to clarify its position.
- Army spokespersons stated that the action was taken in accordance with the legal orders of the tribunal and was necessary to maintain the institution’s disciplinary tradition.
However, following the press conference, reports emerged that a senior officer, Major General Kabir Ahmed, had fled before his arrest or may have received assistance in escaping. At present, there is no official information about his whereabouts. Citing sources, Bangladeshi media reported that some army officers are concerned that this action could affect the institution’s image and morale.
