EARTHQUAKE in Uttarakhand: Mild tremors jolt Chamoli, Tibet

Chamoli Earthquake: Panic erupted in residents of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday morning after an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck the district. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quakes occurred at a depth of 5 km.

“EQ of M: 3.7, On: 30/11/2025 10:27:07 IST, Lat: 30.19 N, Long: 79.48 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Chamoli, Uttarakhand,” the NCS said on X.

Further details are awaited.

Meanwhile, mild quakes of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale hit Tibet in the hours, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. The earthquake struck parts of Tibet at around 03:13 am IST, with a depth of 10 kilometres.

“EQ of M: 3.0, On: 30/11/2025 03:13:53 IST, Lat: 28.05 N, Long: 87.76 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet,” NCS tweeted.

Notably, this was the second mild quake in this month. Earlier, a mild quake measuring 3.8 in magnitude on the Richter Scale hit parts of Tibet on November 11. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quakes occurred at a depth of 10 km.

“EQ of M: 3.8, On: 11/11/2025 04:14:18 IST, Lat: 28.55 N, Long: 86.90 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet,” the NCS posted on X.

Shallow Earthquakes Are More Dangerous

Notably, shallow or mild quakes are more dangerous than deeper ones, as the seismic waves from shallow quakes generally travel a shorter distance to the surface. This causes major ground shaking, resulting in more damage to buildings and other structures. The shallow earthquakes have the potential for higher casualties.

The Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau is defamed for frequent seismic activity that happens due to tectonic plate collisions. Both Tibet and Nepal are located on a fault line. In this fault line, the India(BHARAT)n plate pushes into the Eurasian plate, which creates earthquakes.

These tectonic shifts are powerful enough to change the elevations of Himalayan peaks.
