Hema Malini reveals Amitabh Bachchan was much more jovial during 'Baghban', has now become serious

Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini played the parents of four grown-up sons in the 2003 family drama Baghban. As the project recently clocked 20 years, Bollywood’s Dream Girl opened up about working with Big B during a recent conversation with Hindustan Times. The veteran actress revealed that Amitabh Bachchan used to be much more jovial a decade ago. She recalled that as he would reach the set of Baghban, the crew used to get excited as they knew that Big B would make a joke or two. 

Hema Malini said, “He used to be so jovial, fun-loving. I don’t think he is like that anymore. Pata nahi, thoda serious ho gaye hain aaj kal (He has become a bit serious these days)”, said Malini.

Who convinced Hema Malini to do Baghban?

Hema Malini further added that she was initially not sure about doing Baghban as she had not essayed the role of a mother before this, that to a mother of four grown-up men. She said that her mother was the one who persuaded her to take up the role. The Dream Girl revealed that her mother said to her that if Amitabh Bachchan can play a father, she too can do the movie.

Made under the direction of Ravi Chopra, Bhaghban was financed under the B. R. Films banner. Aside from Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, the cast also saw Salman Khan, Mahima Chaudhry, Aman Verma, Saahil Chadha, Nasir Khan, Divya Dutta, Suman Ranganathan, Rimi Sen, Paresh Rawal and Lillete Dubey in pivotal roles.  

Baghban revolves around an elderly couple, whose four sons are not happy to take care of them post-retirement.

What’s next for Amitabh Bachchan?

Hema Malini has stayed away from the big screens for some time now. She last appeared in the 2020 drama, Shimla Mirch, alongside Rakul Preet Singh and Rajkummar Rao.

In the meantime, Amitabh Bachchan will be seen sharing the screen with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD.

Big B will also be a part of the forthcoming action entertainer, Ganapath. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the venture will see Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon as the lead pair.
